Best Secluded Beaches in Sierra Leone
1. John Obey Beach
Located just north of Bureh Beach, there are no townships or villages in the immediate vicinity of John Obey, which explains why it’s so quiet and secluded. The beach is a strip of sand between the Atlantic Ocean and a double lagoon created by the river estuary, with volcanic rocks, coconut palms and fruit in the background.
It’s quite treacherous to swim in the Atlantic Ocean on this beach, but you can rent kayaks from the nearby eco resort and explore the lagoon at will. For ultimate relaxation, spend the night in the resort – sunsets at John Obey are legendary!
2. Black Johnson Beach
Do you like black sand beaches? Then you should definitely visit Black Johnson beach, which is not named after a pirate, but after the dark colour of its sands.Black Johnson is just 4 km away from John Obey, making it easy to visit both on the same day. It’s surrounded by rainforest and fruit trees, and also houses an eco resort, a truly wonderful place to visit if you’re looking for an escape from hectic Freetown.
3. Turtle Islands
The two beaches mentioned above are located within a day-trip distance from Freetown – most times they’re visited only by a handful of people, but if you’re looking for true solitude, you’ll have to move further afield – for instance, to the Turtle Islands.The Turtle Islands are an archipelago in a remote location west of Bonthe/Sherbro Island. The islands are all small and low-lying, with fine sand beaches, calm lagoons and unspoilt nature. It takes several hours by jeep and boat to get there, but the reward will be the best secluded beaches in Sierra Leone – it will be just you, the sand and the ocean.
