Bo

Highlight

Affectionately referred to by the locals as Bo Town or Sweet Bo, Bo is Sierra Leone’s second-largest centre and the capital of the Southern Province.

Its geographically strategic location at the intersection of roads from Freetown and Makeni makes it a natural trading hub for products like palm oil, coffee, cocoa and rice which are transported to Freetown from the country’s interior. Bo is also a major diamond centre.

For many travellers, however, Bo is a good base from which to explore some of Sierra Leone’s most popular natural attractions, such as nearby Tiwai Island, the Kangari Hills Forest Reserve and Gola Forest Reserve.

Getting There and Around

Getting to Bo from Freetown by road is easy and visitors could choose to hire a vehicle with driver (recommended) or board a bus service from the capital. The road is in excellent condition and it will take approximately three and a half hours to get there.

Okadas are a main means of transport for getting around Bo, but we recommend visitors book a private vehicle and driver to explore the city.
