Ecotourism Sierra Leone
1. Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary
Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in the Moa River in eastern Sierra Leone. This remote river island is a haven for biodiversity, home to over 100 birds and 11 primate species, including chimpanzees and endangered species like the rare Diana monkey and sooty mangabey.
Visitors to Tiwai Island can embark on guided nature walks and boat safaris, as well as staying in cabins and lodges surrounded by the rainforest and managed by the local community.
2. Gola Rainforest National Park
3. Tasso Island
Even though the island only measures four square miles, it offers a variety of ecosystems – beaches and mangroves along the coast, and rainforest in the interior. It is also home to a variety of rare birds, including the endangered Variable Sunbird and Red-Billed Fire Finch.
Tasso Island is usually visited as part of a day trip also including Bunce, but it’s worth staying overnight to support the conservation efforts of the Tasso Ecotourism Project, running a rescue program for Timneh Grey Parrots, a bird that was once common all around Freetown and later almost disappeared.
