1. Bai Bureh
Bai Bureh was a Temne leader who led the resistance against British colonial rule in Sierra Leone, during the Hut Tax War of 1898. Frustrated by the imposition of a property tax on his people, Bai Bureh organized an uprising against the British that quickly turned into a war. He was eventually captured and exiled, but remains a symbol of resistance against colonial oppression.
2. Freetown Colony Founders
The founders of the Freetown Colony, the best known of whom are Thomas Peters and John Clarkson, played a crucial role in the establishment of Sierra Leone as a settlement for formerly enslaved Africans. Thomas Peters was an advocate for the resettlement of freed African Americans, while John Clarkson, a British abolitionist, helped organize the logistics of the resettlement.
