Travel Smart: Health and Safety Guidelines for Sierra Leone
1. Visit a Travel Clinic
Before your trip to Sierra Leone, make sure you pay a visit to a travel clinic to get updated information on what vaccinations you might need. Yellow fever vaccination is required to enter Sierra Leone, other immunizations like typhoid, hepatitis and tetanus are discretionary but advised.Malaria is also present in Sierra Leone, so you might consider prophylaxis – get a medical professional to advise you before your journey.
2. Take all the medication you need
We also recommend that you take all the medication you might need with you, as medicines that are widely available in your country might be harder to come by, especially in rural areas. There are well-stocked pharmacies in Freetown, and some good hospitals – but make sure you have a supply of all basic medication, as well as any prescription medicines you’re on (if any).
3. Let people know where you’re going
This one is for all solo travellers and for those who are planning to travel off the beaten path. Make sure you let people know exactly where and when you are going – this doesn’t just include your family and friends back home, but also your accommodation in Sierra Leone if you’re planning to go hiking by yourself, for example.
4. Avoid driving at night
There are some good roads in Sierra Leone, but the majority of them require some work, and nights in sub-Saharan Africa are very dark. Avoid driving and try not to take shared taxis or other kinds of transport at night,, as this is when majority of accidents occur.
5. Avoid drugs and excessive alcohol consumption
Well, that goes without saying, right? Avoid drugs altogether and try not to get drunk during your time in Sierra Leone – we’re not saying not to have a beer with sunset, or a glass of wine with dinner, just don’t go too crazy!
