Bordering the Republic of Guinea in northern Sierra Leone, the Outamba-Kilimi National Park’s woodland savanna offers sanctuary to such wildlife as chimpanzee, colobus monkey, sooty mangabey and hippo. There have also been reports of elephant and pygmy hippo although these are not often spotted by visitors here.

Visitors can embark on a canoe trip down the Kabba River to spot birdlife, monkeys hanging from trees along the riverbank and pods of hippo. There are also camping facilities for visitors choosing to overnight.

Getting There and Around

Part of its charm is its remote location, but this means accessing Outamba-Kilimi National Park takes effort, particularly during the rainy season. Expect a journey of about nine hours by 4WD drive from Freetown and between three and four hours from Makeni via Kamakwie.

River Canoe Safari

Enjoy a guided canoe safari down the Kabba River keeping a keen eye out for the birdlife and wildlife along the banks of the river. The two- to three-hour journey is blissfully peaceful and if you’re lucky you may just come across a pod or two of hippo.

Karangia Hill Hike

Nature enthusiasts will enjoy a two-hour hike up Karangia Hill – Karangia means ‘Hill of Learning’ in the local Susu language. Best hiked very early morning in time for sunrise, Karangia Hill provides a beautiful vantage point from which to see the rainforest, Mount Outamba and the Kuru Hills on the border of Guinea.

Nature Trek

Intrepid trekkers can embark on a guided hike through the dense Outamba-Kilimi National Park landscape in search of the resident wildlife, from buffalo and bush pigs to monkeys and chimpanzee. A just reward for this two-day trek will be a visit to Yomba Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Sierra Leone.
