Culture lovers visiting Sierra Leone, this article was written with you in mind! Yes, I’m talking to all those that prefer bustling markets to fancy restaurants, and will take a village stay any day before a beach holiday.
We’ve spoken about Sierra Leonean culture before, highlighting the main ethnic groups in the country and traditional villages, but today we’d like to recommend 4 easy ways to explore the cultural heritage of Sierra Leone during your next trip to the country. Let’s go!
Sierra Leone’s Heritage: A Tapestry of History and Tradition
1) Festivals
Timing your visit with a festival is a great way to get close to Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage. The majority of population in our country is Christian and Muslim, and festivities from both of these faiths are widely celebrated – Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, Christmas, Boxing Day and Easter are all public holidays.
Other festivals that are worth planning for are New Year’s Day, traditionally celebrated with beach parties, and Independence Day on April 27th, when amazing lantern parades take place.
If you’re a theatre or music festival person, Sierra Leone does not disappoint! Find more info on our Events page – we love the Ma Dengn and Tangains festival!
2. Markets
Markets are a great place to visit if you wish to meet locals, breathe the atmosphere of a place and pick up some handmade souvenirs. Every major city in Sierra Leone has a market, but we have two that we especially recommend – Big Market in Freetown, and the handicraft market at River No. 2 beach, which also supports local women and community projects.
3. Community Tourism
4. Guided Tours
If you are only staying in Sierra Leone for a few days and don’t have much time to head off the beaten path, a tour with a local guide is also a great way to get close to Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage. We recommend including a historical sight like Bunce Island or the Sierra Leone National Museum, to learn more about our country’s complicated history.
